From comfort hybrid to trail master!

Stock bike 2004 Giant Sedona LX Hybrid

I originally purchased this bike to ride around my daughters subdivision with her and my grandkids. Previous to this I had never owned a bicycle as an adult.

Cycling has now become my full time hobby and I have 4 different bike builds under my belt. This was actually my 2nd build, the 1st is my Giant carbon TCR composite road bike that I will be blogging about in a future installment.

Anyway, about 3 years ago I rode this bike stock on the PALM (pedal across lower michigan). While on the tour, I noticed that the front shock was completely worn out and my cassette and chain were skipping. At this point I decided to replace some of the major components. Well it didn't take long for it to become a complete frame up transformation!

I discovered that the frame was the same frame that Giant used for their Yukon mountain bikes and the only thing missing was all of the mountain components.

Finished conversion, Full XT treatment

This is the finished bike. Since I replaced everything on it, there is a long list of components I will list. I purchased several of the pieces on the internet, some from Ebay,Tree Fort bikes,Blue Sky Cycling and Universal Cycles.

Starting with the fork and disc brakes. The original bike came with hayes 160mm discs and a spring loaded Suntour shock. It also had Alex 26" rims. The upgrade now consists of Avid BB7 185mm rotors/mechanical
discs, a Solo Rockshock air shock and Mavic rims with XT hubs.

In the rear, the original bike was all Shimano Acera gearing. I updated it all with Shimano XT long cage derailleur/9speed cassette 11/32 and XT narrow chain. All of the drivetrain is the M770 series.

Continuing to the front chainring, I went with an XT triple ring setup 22/32/48T. I also replaced the bottom bracket with an XTR external set. The original crankset used a square taper so it had to be replaced. I wanted the larger chainring for road riding while keeping the smaller rings for hill climbing. I have ridden this on a singletrack locally and I had plenty of low end for all conditions and elevation changes. The pedals are VP sealed bearing alloy pedals. I also have a pair of XTR PD-M985 SPD's for singletrack riding.

The handlbars are raceface alloys short bars and the XT brake levers and thumb shifters are seperate peices I ended up taking the gear indicators off since I never really paid attention to them anyway!  I also replaced the headset with a Cane Creek 110 series. The seat is made by Bontrager and it is specifically designed for mountain bike riding. It comes in 3 different sizes.

This is another shot of the rear showing the Avid brakes and full drivetrain.

In the end it was an interesting build, I ended up buying several bicycle specific tools for this build including a bike stand. I have upgraded the seatpost and stem as well making both of them white to continue the blue and white theme. Its a blast to ride and nice to be able to bring it up to another level of quality and ride!
